Leading Future Medicine Through Medical Big Data Research Konyang University Hospital Medical Data Research Group

Since its establishment, Konyang University Hospital has been a pioneer in the central region, introducing the first clinical pathology automation system and prescription computerization program. This differentiated strategy has enabled the hospital to develop a patient-friendly care system, receiving considerable acclaim in the local medical community. In 2021, it expanded with a new hospital building, striving to adapt to the rapid shift towards a data-driven society.

To effectively and swiftly carry out Digital Transformation and lead future medical environments, Konyang University Hospital organized the Healthcare Data Science Center in January 2019. In October 2023, the center was renamed and expanded as the Medical Data Research Group. This group is dedicated to leading future medicine and ushering in the era of personalized healthcare through diverse research in the medical big data field, including training experts.

A prominent ongoing research project is the “2023 K-Health National Medical AI Service and Industry Ecosystem Construction Project,” solicited by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency in 2023. Supported by Daejeon Metropolitan City and managed by Daejeon Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency, the project features a consortium including the research team of Medical Data Research Group (headed by Director Kim Jong-yeop) and Professor Lee Young-jin from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine as the principal investigator. The project, with the vision of transforming Daejeon into an AI healthcare innovation city based on data, currently involves various initiatives such as a cloud-based medical data distribution platform, a data safe zone, a care network, and support for AI medical solution demonstration.

A Cloud-Based Medical Data Distribution Platform

The first of its kind in the nation, this platform aims to create a medical ecosystem by accumulating and utilizing medical information data from medical institutions in Daejeon Metropolitan City, enhancing the medical industry and patient services.

Data Safe Zone

The Data Safe Zone is an independent space where medical, health, and healthcare data collected from medical institutions are stored and processed. It provides a secure environment and system through the Data Safe Zone platform, allowing businesses and researchers to use the data they need conveniently.

Care Network

The Care Network aims to facilitate information exchange among Daejeon's primary, secondary, and tertiary medical institutions, enhancing patient convenience and ensuring continuous care by preventing inaccurate diagnoses and duplicate prescriptions. Konyang University Hospital is the hub, linking over 45 local medical institutions to activate information exchange.
In 2022, Konyang University Hospital was also selected for the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s 'Clinical Demonstration Research Support Center Project for Medical AI Utilizing Real-Use Data.' The project aims to validate and enhance the efficacy of domestic medical AI technologies through 'User-Tailored Medical AI Clinical Demonstration Support.'

Through this project, the hospital established a clinical demonstration system focused on clinical settings, conducted demonstrations for actual buyers, and offered tangible revenue to reward participating companies. Initiated in 2022, this five-year project is currently in its second year, focusing on developing a matrix matching demonstration network, building a standardized system for full-cycle support of Real World Data (RWD), developing a safety monitoring system, and creating a system for usability evaluation.

Currently, 12 primary and secondary clinics (15 departments) are participating in the clinical demonstration for AI medical devices. Beneficiary companies include Monitor Corporation (LuCAS-CXR, LuCAS-plus), HealthHub (Boneage io), Dong-A ST (Hicardi+), Infinite Healthcare (INFINITT SmartEndo), and Vatech MCIS (EzOrtho). The project aims to enhance the international competitiveness of domestic medical AI technologies and lead clinical demonstrations in real-world environments.
