Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science opened its doors on August 27, 2021. Built on the site of the venue for Daejeon Expo 1993, the shopping complex offers more than just a wide array of consumer goods–itis a place where visitors can enjoy culture, the arts, and even science.

NEXPERIUM, a Fun Science Center Where You Can Meet the Future

Be fitting the reputation of Daejeon as a science city, Daejeon Shinsegae Art & Science contains NEXPERIUM, a science center where visitors can learn about and experience various scientific technologies and principles. Designed and created by researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) known for nurturing some of the nation’s most brilliant minds, NEXPERIUM is divided based on three themes : robotics, biotechnology, and space. At the science museum, visitors can touch robots, see how they are made and how they can revolutionize people’s lives, and learn about artificial intelligence technology that forms the basis of robotics. There are also exhibits of artificial satellites for observing other planets aside from our own and exploring space. Wearable devices are provided for the visitors to view the exhibits with, and their behaviors are automatically analyzed by AI to guide them to the sections that will likely interest them. This is expected to arouse children’s interest in science and technology.

Art of Life

In 1966, during a time when the opportunity to appreciate the arts were rare, Shinsegae Department Store became the first domestic department store to create a venue for art exhibitions, such as photography, handicraft, and calligraphy exhibitions. Since then, Shinsegae has provided the general public a chance to enjoy various genres of art and cultural content through more than fifty exhibitions and events. The Art Space 193 in Daejeon became the sixth art venue to be opened by Shinsegae. It is a gallery located on the 42nd floor of the Expo Tower, the height of which is 193m, symbolizing the Daejeon Expo 1993. The Art Space 193 contains an observatory where you can overlook the entire city of Daejeon, and an artwork by the world-famous installation artist, OlafurEliasson, can beseen as well.

The 11,240m2garden on the rooftop of the eight-story building consists of the Tyranno Park, Maze Garden, Bamboo Grove, Family Forest, and Forest Terrace where people can relax away from the hustle and bustle and gain a healing experience. The area outside the buildings is just as exquisite as the inside, with fantastic lights that illuminate the city of Daejeon in the evening.
